RE-THINK OUR INNOVATION IMPACTS

Image
Today I lived a situation that makes me think again about evolution / innovation and the effects they bring to society and people. We decided to have breakfast in the center of Almada in a café whose interior space "stopped" in time, at least thirty years ago .... the place was not full, I saw only older residents ...   but the food was simple and, maybe due to te habit, I waited to take the table board, the waiter kindly ask us to see down because she would take the food to our table herself... the people talked to us and wished everything good for our lives, losing (or winning) 5 or 10 minutes to talk about the life and simple things but who show affection and attention to others ... I miss this feeling, this kind of emotion and sense of citizenship / community, values ... made me think what we are doing ... why this constant pressure to have everything "new" to be and be fashionable? Why do we give more importance to this to fashions than to the essence

IMPERFECTION IN DESIGN EDUCATION - WE WANT AND STAND FOR IT at DELLI -

Image
In the words of Stephen Hawking, imperfection created the Universe, or rather the structures that allowed its creation. I question myself should a Educational or training program, especially in the creative area look for Imperfection as a way to create in students the structures that allow them to create their own creative being? Will it be on the chaos and not in the perfect "alignment" of conditions and contents that the best and most attentive "students or apprentices" find the random, unordered combinations that make them unique? Luís Alegre DELLI-Design Lusófona Lisboa, inspired me to re-think this scientific concept and it's application to the education of DESIGN ... Looking back, the best students that I helped to educate "flourished" in my most imperfect courses, where I risked more, where I started everything without certainty of NOTHING, and where "order" and structures were being created throughout the experimentation a

DESIGN SYSTEMS more discursive and reflective approach based on debating

Image
SLOW DESIGN THINKING!  Its Really about "Deep Thinking" not fast passed Solutions !  That is why i love my job and not doing "Meetoo" Design Thinking approach...if so at the starting point of the Design System Process i'am running this week at Karel de Grote University, i would not have Macro research themes for innovation from my students as: Legalize Drugs (societal and technological point of view) Mischaracterization of society (lost of values, norms, Meaningful jobs and purpose) Mobility (green technology, human centred systems, smart cities) Culture Diversity (how it impacts jobs and education) Security (Technologies, personal spheres, Crime rats) Following empathy maps, personas, customer journeys at these point i would have fuc.... ideas about Apps, Drone Services and stupid not needed products... My new discursive and reflective approach based on prospective debates among students on social issues, based on their meaning and purpose, has

DESIGN THINKING "untruths"!

Image
I keep reading interesting articles about design thinking but most of them replicates the "superficial wisdom" that is installed on the Design Thinking subject! The latest two nerve breaking "untruths"are: 1- DESIGN THINKING WAS BORN 15 years ago! - NO, it was not born 15 years ago !!!! the way Designers Think, their practice, the use of an participative process and human centred approach has always been present in Science / Design Praxis. For example the Nordic Participatory Design movement of the 60s ... 2- Same authors are now-a-days recommending that the Design Thinking model needs to integrate Systems thinking knowledge! - That is not new either! the IDEAS(R)EVOLUTION methodology that I am author has added this systemic vision since its inception and has been duly published since 2009/2010 in different articles and was defended in a PhD thesis in 2016. The problem is a whole set of people who have appropriated "design thinking" as a

How to define Today's Learning Time, Spaces and knowledge structures?

Image
Are the physical and digital infrastructures, ie buildings or online platforms, the only spaces or structures where learning and knowledge transfer can take place? It will be the teacher's knowledge and access to "all the information of the world" the only guarantees that we acquire the correct and necessary knowledge to: perceive who we are, what distinguishes us, what motivates us and what allows us to have the sense of accomplishment? And is the teacher's knowledge in the books, in his powerpoint presentations, in what he publishes, and what is seen and reviewed by his peers? Are, for example, the Ted.com, aggregators off "all the information of the world" according to their own perspective and focus, the guarantee of our freedom and capacity to design our education and qualification of skills, knowledge and techniques relevant to our personal and professional context?  Nobody questions that Learning e Knowledge are the foundations to enable ou

Creativity is about parenthood, education and freedom

Image
Creativity is about parenthood, education and freedom. Can companies develop a creative culture based on these drivers? Recently, exactly two weeks ago at 6am to be more specific, we – two founding partners of Innokinetics – were blessed with a newborn baby girl! This unique event in our lives made us think about “the what’s and the how’s” as regards the way we aspire to raise our baby. Being designers, artists and innovators ourselves, we see our child’s life as a  “blank canvas”  waiting to be filled in with exciting, colourful and wonderful things. The question however is how exactly and with what? We read books, talked to friends, attended meetings and conferences. We even did some research! But at the end of the day, the basic principle came down to a reflection on our own personal experiences and  role models , being our own parents! The starting point of this introspection was the following: Today, we are being recognized as “creative persons” at least by some of our fr

"Timeless Space" for Creativity - Education based on Memory + Imagination, Past & Future not the PRESENT please!

Image
CREATIVItY, or rather Creative Thinking, happens exactly in the "timeless space" of the encounter between our memory and our capacity for imagination, that is, between the past and the future. Memory  feeds on  "lived" experiences  whether they are factual, "adjusted by our present perception of what was the reality" or fictitious.  Imagination  feeds on the projections we are capable of making of the future. In this timeless space, "informed creativity"  is born, built on the stimuli of "experience" and "imagination" that allows us to "cross" or re-interpret signs and signifiers, generating  new meaning or "new information" . We tend to call this process  "Intuition"  many times because it is difficult to accurately make it tangible and define all the moments that happen internally in our body and which are then  transformed  into the  creative Idea  or the creative solution. In this s
